Extension Cords Are Temporary - Not Permanent Wiring

Extension cords and power strips are designed for temporary, flexible use—not as substitutes for permanent wiring. When used long-term, especially under rugs, through walls or ceilings, across doorways, or to power major appliances, cords can become crushed, damaged, overloaded, or overheated, increasing the risk of electric shock or fire.

“Romex,” commonly used to describe Type NM-B cable, is designed and listed for permanent installation. It contains insulated conductors, an equipment-grounding conductor, and a protective outer jacket. When properly installed, it is correctly sized for the circuit, secured and protected from damage, and terminated inside approved electrical boxes.

Romex is only safer when installed correctly and in an approved location. If an extension cord is regularly needed in the same area, have a licensed electrician install a properly located receptacle or another permanent solution.
